House cleaning seems daunting because it can be boring and repetitive. Yet, it’s something you have to do over and over again if you want to keep your space nice and tidy. So if you want to spice up your “responsible adult life” a little bit, check out this list of bizarre but amazingly effective home-cleaning hacks. Trust us; they’re absolutely worth a shot.

So roll up your sleeves, and let’s get cleaning!

Interesting Home Cleaning Hacks

  • Bread to clean up broken glass. Here’s a time-saving home cleaning hack to keep you safe from getting cut. Instead of using a kitchen towel, press a slice of bread onto the floor or any surface where the mess is to pick up all the tiny shards.
  • Tennis ball to clean scuff marks off floors. Cut an X in the ball, put it on the end of a broomstick, then use it to rub away scuffs and other unsightly markings on your wall. If you don’t want to cut it, you can also scratch it directly on the wall holding it with your hand.
  • Toothbrush and WD-40 to clean bathroom grout. Spray WD-40 on the grout, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub the surface with a toothbrush to get in the crevices.
  • Dryer sheet to remove soap scum. Wet a dryer sheet and use it to scrub soap scum off of shower doors and walls.
  • Shaving cream to clean bathroom mirrors. Spray shaving cream on a mirror and wipe it off with a damp cloth to remove streaks.
  • Lint roller to clean lampshades and sofas. Roll it over the fabric surface to pick up dust and debris.
  • Mayonnaise to remove water stains on wood. Apply a thick layer of mayonnaise, of any brand, to the stain, let it sit for an hour, then wipe it away.
  • Potato to clean a rusty knife. Cut a potato in half, rub it over the rusted area, then rinse with water.
  • Baking soda and vinegar to clean a dishwasher. Add a cup of white vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher, sprinkle baking soda on the door, and run it on the hottest cycle.
  • Hair dryer to remove candle wax from carpets. Heat up the wax with a hair dryer, then gently scrape it away with a butter knife.
  • Dryer sheet or lint roller to remove pet hair from furniture. No handheld vacuum for your car? No prob. Rub a dryer sheet over the furniture to pick up pet hair.
  • Salt and vinegar to clean copper. Here’s an eco-friendly way to clean your precious copper pots and pans. Sprinkle salt on the surface, then pour vinegar over it and scrub it with a cloth.
  • Aluminum foil to clean silverware. Line a dish with aluminum foil, fill it with hot water and a tablespoon of baking soda, then soak the silverware for a few minutes.
  • Cola to clean toilets. Pour a can of cola into the toilet bowl, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a brush and flush.
  • Vinegar and baking soda to unclog a drain. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar, then cover the drain and let it sit for 30 minutes before flushing it with hot water.
  • Old newspaper to remove stubborn grease on pots and pans. Create scourers by crumpling newspapers into balls and lifting oil and grease from kitchenware. Rinse and wash as usual afterward.
  • Vinegar and water to clean pet urine stains. Soak up the urine with a towel, then spray the area with vinegar and water and blot dry.
  • Baking soda and vinegar to clean a showerhead. If you have hard water in your area, you’ll always have mineral deposits clogging your showerhead. How to keep it squeaky clean? Put a cup of baking soda into a plastic bag, add vinegar, tie the bag around the showerhead, and let it sit for an hour before running the water.
  • Vinegar and water to clean a coffee pot. Fill the coffee pot with a mixture of vinegar and water and run it through a cycle, then run it again with plain water to rinse.
  • Use a slice of bread to pick up stray glitter. Press a piece of bread on any surface where you spot glitters and dispose of it after.
